Woodstock Elementary School has a part-time guidance counselor. Guidance services focus on developing student strength, both academically and socially. Coping effectively with new challenges throughout life requires a sense of security and confidence. Working with students individually, making referrals within the community mental health network and meeting with parents are possible forms of interventions. More specific needs are addressed within a school team format. Such as the educative support team (EST), which brainstorms strategies, a student may need to explore emotional and /or academic challenges. An individual education plan (IEP) is meetings designed to custom students needs as they relate to a learning disability and include the special education team. Group counseling and classroom guidance sessions are ongoing preventative measures to maximize the well being of the whole student population. I usually consult with the classroom teacher to determine what the class needs is before guidance classes begin. I will then meet for five or six weeks and focus on a certain theme. Some of the classroom topics are learning to communicate effectively, conflict and stress management, making healthy choices for personal safety, tolerance for differences, and awareness of diversity.
Please feel free to call me if you have any questions.
