The Woodstock Elementary School library program is an integral part of our school's instructional curriculum. We begin by introducing our youngest students to the joy of books and encourage them to develop a lifetime love of reading for pleasure. We present a broad range of authors, illustrators and genres that are appropriate to each grade level. We begin teaching library skills in kindergarten. Our youngest students learn not only appropriate library behaviors and care of materials but the organization of the library. They can then find their favorite books independently. Each year we build on these basic skills emphasizing the Dewey Decimal System and use of our automated catalog in third grade. Upper grade reference, research and information literacy skills are taught in context with classroom curriculum.
Our library is a hub of activity throughout the year. With a collection of books and non-print materials totaling more than 12,000 items and internet access, the library is a focal point for curriculum-related research. We provide students with skills instruction to access, evaluate and use information. One of our main instructional goals is to ensure that each child acquires the information literacy skills necessary to become a lifelong learner. With the current emphasis on skills that will enable students to access and synthesize information available in both print and electronic media, the role of the library and the librarian takes on new importance to the success of the entire school.
WES Library is accessible to everyone all day during the regular school hours and until 3:30 p.m. The staff supports individual students with reading guidance and with research as needed. We assist students and teachers retrieve a vast array of sources, whether they are in our library collection, from other libraries, or from a national network or database. We assist in finding and using information, including print, non-print and electronic media. Parents, too, are always welcome in our library. We have a professional and parenting section that provides educational resources for parents and teachers. Parents are also welcome to select children's books that they may wish to share with their children in the home.
